Modern Web Performance & SEO Architecture

Performance is a ranking signal and a conversion signal. Users forgive ugly faster than they forgive slow — and Google measures what real devices experience.

This checklist reflects how we ship marketing sites on modern SSR frameworks: small JS, aggressive image discipline, and fonts that do not block paint.

▪Rendering strategy

Pick the simplest model that keeps TTFB and interactivity low.

PatternWhen to useWatch-out
SSGMarketing pages, blogs, resourcesRebuild on content change
SSRPersonalized or auth-gated viewsCache HTML at edge where possible
ISR / hybridLarge catalogs, frequent updatesCache invalidation complexity
Client-only SPADense dashboards behind loginPoor default for public SEO pages

▪Image pipeline

Images are usually the LCP element. Treat them as a pipeline, not an upload folder.

  • ✓Serve WebP/AVIF with fallbacks where needed
  • ✓Explicit width and height on every content image
  • ✓Lazy-load below-the-fold; priority only for LCP hero
  • ✓Compress heroes to ≤ 200 KB when possible

▪Font and CSS discipline

Limit to two families; subset weights you actually use. Preconnect to font CDN; avoid invisible text during load.

Head hints (example)
<link rel="preconnect" href="https://fonts.googleapis.com" />
<link rel="preconnect" href="https://fonts.gstatic.com" crossorigin />
<!-- Load only weights 400, 600, 800 -->

▪JavaScript budget

Marketing pages should not ship a framework’s entire kitchen sink. Audit bundles; defer analytics; hydrate only what must be interactive.

Pair this with the 39-point launch checklist before go-live.

  • ✓Set a max JS budget per route (e.g. 150 KB gzip for homepage)
  • ✓Remove unused UI libraries from landing templates
  • ✓Measure in Lighthouse mobile, not desktop-only

▪Action Steps

  1. 1

    Run Lighthouse mobile on homepage and one inner page; save reports.

  2. 2

    Fix LCP element (usually hero image or font) first.

  3. 3

    Set JS budget in CI or pre-launch review.

  4. 4

    SEO fundamentals: blog SEO basics.

▪Frequently Asked Questions

Is 100 Lighthouse required?+

No — but sub-2.5s LCP and CLS under 0.1 are worth targeting for money pages.

Will a CDN fix everything?+

It helps TTFB and caching; it does not fix multi-megabyte heroes or JS bloat.

WordPress vs modern SSR?+

Either can be fast. WordPress needs plugin discipline; SSR needs bundle discipline.
